The LEED – or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – rating system was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) as the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that deal entirely with improved environmental and human health performance, from design through construction, maintenance and operation.

Through the implementation of practical strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in a variety of environmentally focused areas, The Brando secured its LEED certification. These areas included sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. The strategies used in the design and construction of The Brando ranged from local, renewable and recycled building materials to the pioneering of a deep seawater air-conditioning system to renewable energy sources such as solar energy and coconut oil. As a result, the resort is close to carbon neutrality and self-sustainability.

Other projects of The Brando that contributed to the resorts LEED certification include 86 percent of wood-based building materials being certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), increased ventilation in all buildings to create a healthier environment for occupants and a higher indoor environmental quality, the use of only indigenous plants to create water efficient landscaping, having 100 percent of irrigation water come from rainwater recapture and treated waste water, among other things. The Brando also offers Green Tours, comprehensive visits to The Brando’s eco-friendly facilities including the Ecostation, SWAC Building, a coconut-oil powered electric plant, the water production plant, the waste separation center, the organic garden, bee hives and solar panel sites.

In addition to its LEED certification, The Brando was awarded Viruoso’s 2015 Best of the Best Sustainable Tourism Leadership Award, a Gold Magellan Award for Hospitality Overall, Eco-Friendly “Green” Resort/Hotel by Travel Weekly and Best Eco-Tourism Property by Luxury Travel Magazine.
