Supplier News: New Venues in Scottsdale, Houston

A number of new meeting venues in the United States lead this week's supplier news in the meetings and events industry.

New Sonesta Suites Opens in Scottsdale

Sonesta International Hotels Corporation has announced the addition of Sonesta Suites Scottsdale Gainey Ranch to its portfolio. The new hotel increases the Sonesta footprint in Arizona to three properties, joining the existing Sonesta ES Suites Tucson and Sonesta ES Suites Flagstaff, and the new hotel marks the company's first full-service property in the state.

Located in an exclusive neighborhood in Scottsdale, the new hotel has all-suite accommodations with full kitchens, a pool, a sundeck within a landscaped courtyard, and several on-site dining options. Next door, guests will find the upscale Shops at Gainey Village with boutiques, a farmers market and a collection of restaurants. Just around the corner, visitors can pamper themselves at The Gainey Village Spa & Health Club. The hotel is also conveniently situated nearby numerous corporate offices, including Nationwide Insurance, VOYA, and Wells Fargo.

Sonesta Suites Scottsdale Gainey Ranch has 162 studio, one- and two- bedroom suites. On-site dining options include The Hearth Room, serving a full breakfast buffet and evening reception with appetizers, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages; and The Terrace Bar, overlooking the courtyard and offering an al fresco setting with a selection of signature cocktails and a lunch menu in season. In-room dining is also available in the evenings. Additional amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, a fitness center with heated pool and hot tub, beautiful landscape and gardens including fire pits, complimentary shuttle service (transporting guests to destinations within five miles of the hotel) and 2,500 square feet of flexible meeting space, plus dining and outdoor entertaining space for corporate or private events.

The hotel is centrally set five miles north of Scottsdale Fashion Square and Old Town Scottsdale, and five miles south of the trendy Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter. The new Odysea Aquarium, Butterfly Wonderland, Top Golf, I-Fly Indoor Skydiving, and the Talking Stick Casino are just a few miles east off the 101 freeway. For baseball fans, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, the Spring Training home of the Arizona Diamond Backs and the Colorado Rockies, is four miles away, as is Camelback Mountain, offering views and hiking trails.

Omni Houston Adds New Meeting Space

The Omni Houston Hotel has reopened its doors and is welcoming guests after undergoing a $30 million renovation.

The design of the 378-guestroom property's renovation aims to embrance Houston’s culture and attitude. Meeting space on the first and second floors were redesigned and include an additional 2,500 square feet of flexible meeting space. The property offers two new conference areas with boardrooms and breakout space.

The project's design inspiration draws from an authentic local aesthetic that includes leather, bronze, brass and lush greens, providing a new take on a “modern Texas” and welcoming natural light throughout with floor‐to‐ceiling windows and open communal spaces. The lobby has a moss wall behind three copper reception desks.

“Throughout this renovation, we collaborated with the design team to showcase Houston’s natural surroundings while also giving a nod to the city’s rich history,” said Laura McKoy, vice president of interior design and creative director for Omni Hotels & Resorts, in a written statement.

The first floor  continues throughout various public spaces, including the La Reserve whiskey lounge, which pays homage to Houston’s history. COMMONCOLOR, a high-end retail venue, features treasures from What Goes Around Comes Around and showcases vintage handbags and jewelry from Chanel, Hermés, Louis Vuitton and more. The Lobby Library offers guests plush sofas, leather armchairs, a bookshelf wall and fireplace. The overall aesthetic has clean lines that fuse rich and natural textures for a more residential feel. Birdies Cafe & Bar takes inspiration from Memorial Park’s greenery while providing views of the outdoor landscape seen through floor‐to‐ceiling windows that line the venue. The restaurant is designed to encourage guests to gather, collaborate and socialize around the curved shaped bar for a communal feel.

The hotel’s nightclub, Black Swan, also returns with a similar modern design. Mokara Spa & Salon’s new aesthetic embodies nature as designers used soft, whitewashed woods and lush green walls. The use of stone, wood and dark metals throughout create a mix of texture and contrast. Treatment rooms exhibit earthy elements such as raw wood accents and stone and pebbles are weaved throughout to marry the spa with the natural outdoor landscape for a serene experience. As spa guests step out and enter the salon, they will see a more contemporary setting featuring a clean palette of white washed wood and bronze metal accents.

Conrad Washington, DC to Open Next to Convention Center

The new Conrad Washington, DC is set to open this coming February, bringing an additional 32,000 square feet of meeting and event space to the destination.

The 360-room, 10-floor hotel will anchor the second phase of CityCenterDC, a new mixed-used development with over 35 high-end retail stores. The property will also be right next to the convention center.

Notably, the hotel will be the only luxury property in DC with 100 percent of its event space above ground. All event spaces and guestrooms will have floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize the amount of natural light. The hotel will have two ballrooms – one at 7,626 square feet and one at 3,300 square feet – as well as three outdoor terraces, a rooftop bar and a dedicated event terrace with panoramic views of the U.S. Capitol. There will also be five boardrooms, including two that have direct access to one of the outdoor terraces.

The hotel’s design will aim for a more contemporary feel, drawing inspiration from Washington, DC’s urban geography, which is heavy on diagonal avenues and circles. Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, which designed the Olympic Stadium in Beijing and The Tate Modern in London, spearheaded the overall hotel concept, with HKS Inc. serving as the architect of record and production architect on the project. Consultant Rottet Studio designed the hotel’s interiors, while Tatar Art Projects curated an extensive contemporary art collection inspired by the Washington Color School movement.

James Beard nominees and “Top Chef” alumni Bryan and Michael Voltaggio will helm the hotel’s signature restaurant, Estuary, which will serve an elevated take on farm-to-table cuisine from around the Chesapeake Bay. The Voltaggios will also handle the property’s event catering menu.

On the 10th floor, the Sakura Club will be exclusively available to guests who purchase club level guestrooms and suites. The space, which draws aesthetic inspiration from Washington, DC’s famous cherry trees, will offer club level guests elevated personalized service, including meals made to order by a private chef, a dedicated club concierge, use of private meeting rooms, priority reservations at Estuary and special access to rooftop bar events.

Like the rest of CityCenterDC, the hotel’s ground level will also offer plenty of retail space, including the mid-Atlantic flagship store for Tiffany’s.
