Supplier News: New Venues in New England, Puerto Rico and San Diego




A number of new venues lead this week's supplier news in the meetings and events industry.

Now Open: MGM Springfield

MGM Springfield, MGM’s new resort in New England with an 8,000-seat arena and and 34,000 square feet of meeting space, is now open. 

The opening follows two days of festivities at the resort. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Mayor Domenic Sarno, Congressman Richard Neal and Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby joined MGM Resorts Chairman and CEO Jim Murren and MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis Friday to commemorate the occasion. Actor Mark Wahlberg also announced that he will be bringing his family’s Wahlburger’s to the resort. It will be located on the corner of Main and Union Streets on the southeast corner of the MGM Springfield campus, and is expected to open in late 2019.   

The MGM Springfield has 250 guestrooms, including 16 suites. Design details—including factory-style paned glass and Edison bulb fixtures—harken to Springfield's industrial roots, while eclectic artwork aims to evoke the locale's creative iconography, visually referencing Emily Dickinson and Dr. Seuss – such as the 1,600-square-foot Presidential Suite's hat chandelier inspired by the 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins

The 8,000-seat MassMutual Center will host a lineup of live entertainment beginning with Stevie Wonder on September 1. The property also plays host to social elements like the region's first public Topgolf Swing Suite, Regal Cinemas, and TAP Sports Bar complete with a 10-lane bowling alley and arcade. The Plaza serves as an outdoor gathering space hosting interactive events designed to foster community engagement, such as Beer Yoga, a pop-up art gallery by Springfield muralist John Simpson, seasonal activations and more.  

With approximately 34,000 square feet of versatile space, MGM Springfield's meeting and event center has ballrooms, meeting rooms and boardrooms adjacent to a 6,200-square-foot outdoor terrace that floods pre-function areas with natural light. For indoor-outdoor space with a historical twist, guests can host events in the resort's castle-like Armory, which was built in 1895 and restored to its current state by the MGM Resorts' design team.

Restaurants include Italian coastal concept Cal Mare by James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Mina and Chef Adam Sobel; fine steaks and seafood at The Chandler Steakhouse with Hell's Kitchen season 14 winner Meghan Gill serving as executive chef; MGM's signature TAP Sports Bar; and South End Market, a modern food hall with six eateries. In terms of bars, the Lobby Bar, Knox Bar and Commonwealth serve a drinks menu spotlighting local ingredients and freshly pressed juices. 

The resort also has a full-service spa with seven treatment rooms, couples' suites and a warm design inspired by New England's signature maritime style. A separate salon for men and women hosts an in-house barbershop. There is also an 8,000-square-foot pool. 

Meliá Coco Beach, Puerto Rico to Reopen With New Ballroom

Meliá Hotels & Resorts has announced that the Meliá Coco Beach in Puerto Rico will reopen December 15 after being closed due to the effects of last year’s Hurricane Maria. The resort, which is in a gated community and surrounded by reef-protected beaches and El Yunque National Forest, is undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation that will include amenity upgrades, new local-focused experiences and Meliá-branded services including its premium service concept, THE LEVEL, and the addition of new meeting and event space.

The new, 41,280 sq. ft. meeting and event space has been designed to accommodate various size groups and has video mapping and a number of other tech amenities. The space includes an expansive ballroom that is perfect for any size meeting or event, and a foyer with floor-to-ceiling windows.

When it reopens Meliá Coco Beach, which is 20 minutes from the airport, will also have 486 guest rooms, including 480 Junior Suites and six ocean front villas. All rooms have been completely re-designed and focus on using light, natural colors alongside comforting patterns and contain warm, traditional décor. Each room is housed in a two-story bungalow with views of the ocean and gardens throughout the property. Additionally, the resort will have a variety of restaurants offering international cuisine.

Meliá Coco Beach will also have THE LEVEL, with 126 Junior Suites and six oceanfront villas with the brand’s signature elevated service concept. THE LEVEL guests receive access to a private lounge with premium beverages and light bites served throughout the day, a pool for blissful relaxation, preferential bookings at additional on-property restaurants, concierge service and upgraded in-room amenities.

Additional services and amenities include Romance by Meliá with curated packages designed for weddings, honeymoons and other special occasions, and a Spa, offering a bevy of restorative treatments including facials, massages and more. Guests of Meliá Coco Beach also receive discounted greens fees, tee times, private lessons and club storage at two 18-hole championship courses designed by PGA professional Tom Kite at Coco Beach Golf & Country Club, which hosts the PGA Tour event in Puerto Rico.

InterContinental San Diego Opens With 95K Square Feet of Event Space

The new InterContinental San Diego officially opened its doors August 28, bringing 95,000 square feet of new meeting space to the destination. 

The 400-room property has 95,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including 35,000 square feet of flexible indoor space with natural light in every room; space for events of up to 1,500 attendees in the 12,000-square-foot Pacific Ballroom; and 60,000 square feet of outdoor space in the form of bay view terraces and Lane Field Park, former home of the San Diego Padres. Express event access from porte cochere to the conference space is available via dedicated elevators. 

The new hotel is also close to the Embarcadero, which docks both the USS Midway and Maritime Museum of San Diego, as well as Little Italy, the San Diego Convention Center, Gaslamp Quarter and Seaport Village

The hotel's signature restaurant, Vistal, also opened August 28. Helmed by local award-winning chefs Paul McCabe and Amy DiBiase, the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu inspired by the flavors of the Bahn peninsula, Pacific islands and the Mediterranean. Also opening alongside Vistal is the hotel's outdoor pool bar that commands the 4th floor rooftop. 

Launching in late 2018 will be Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse in the brand’s first West Coast location. Expected to debut in early 2019 will be a ground level Starbucks and a 19th floor rooftop bar. All retail portions of the hotel will be managed by the San Diego-based Reef Real Estate Services.
