A number of new venues lead this week's news in the meetings and events industry. 

Daytona Beach to Open First Hotel Next to Speedway

Daytona Beach’s first full-service hotel situated next to the famed Daytona International Speedway is slated to open this spring as The DAYTONA, an Autograph Collection property. The modern, boutique hotel will anchor the new retail, dining, and entertainment destination, ONE DAYTONA, while offering access to the city’s hottest attractions. 

The six-story, new-build hotel will have a sleek and modern design that pays homage to Daytona’s motorsports history with amenities that include 144 guest rooms, a full-service restaurant & bar, on-site shopping, a heated pool with private cabanas, an outdoor fire pit, fitness center, and more than 10,000 square feet of meeting and event space. A second floor lobby area will include “The Grid,” where show cars will be on display year-round, while an outdoor terrace overlooking the Victory Circle will offer prime people-watching and viewing for live entertainment and Vegas-like synchronized fountain shows. Fitness options will include bicycle rentals and a fitness center overlooking the property’s resort-style swimming pool.  

Located a mile from the Daytona Beach International Airport and less than five miles from the beach, the property will offer complimentary airport shuttle service and easy accessibility to area attractions, including the speedway, local beaches, museums, outdoor recreation, and more.

Hyatt Breaks Ground on Two New Event Hotels in Oceanside, CA

Hyatt and developer S.D. Malkin Properties, Inc. have held a groundbreaking ceremony in Oceanside, California, on the site where two new properties are expected to open under the Joie de Vivre Hotels and Destination Hotels brands in late 2020.

The adjacent hotels together will be the largest oceanfront development in San Diego County in over a decade, Hyatt said. The 2.75-acre new-build project along Mission Avenue and North Pacific Street will offer guests immediate beach access and a combined 387 rooms, most with water-facing views.

San Diego-based firm Delawie is the architect for both properties, which will be operated by Hyatt as part of its boutique Joie de Vivre Hotels brand and resort-oriented Destination Hotels. The new-build project, situated on over 600 feet of beachfront at the base of the historic Oceanside Pier, will offer ocean views and add multiple restaurants, bars, and event venues to the destination, where guests will have access to surfing, swimming and water sports.

The Joie de Vivre hotel will have 161 guest rooms and suites, as well as the renovated “Top Gun” house—the iconic 1887 Graves House featured in the popular 1980s film—which will be accessible to the public. At the hotel, designed by interior design firm EDG, travelers can expect a casual, laid-back, barefoot luxury ambiance. The hotel will also have a restaurant designed by Los Angeles-based firm Studio Collective, a rooftop pool and bar, and over 3,000 square feet of retail.

The Destination hotel will be a 226-room property situated on the south block of the new development. 

Complementary to the Joie de Vivre hotel, the Destination property will offer guests an elevated 9,000-square-foot pool deck with ocean views, a signature restaurant, bar lounge, luxury spa, library, and over 20,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The hotel interiors are being designed by San Diego-based firm Bill Bocken Architecture and Interior Design in conjunction with Delawie, while the restaurant is being imagined by Los Angeles-based firm Bells and Whistles.

The adjacent properties will conveniently be near the Oceanside Amtrak Station and a short drive to some of Southern California’s famous attractions, including the San Diego Zoo and Disneyland. The hotel will also celebrate local artists throughout the property when it opens.

Hard Rock Heads for Amsterdam

Hard Rock International has announced plans for a new hotel in Amsterdam: the Hard Rock Hotel Amsterdam American, which is set to open in April 2020. Located on the Leidseplein Square, the hotel will be set in some of the city's most famous Art Nouveau buildings, according to Hard Rock. It will have 173 rooms and suites and newly renovated interiors; however, the hotel will keep all vintage decorative features intact throughout, from stained-glass windows to vibrant paintings on the interior walls, which will also be adorned with signature Hard Rock memorabilia.

Accommodating both business and leisure travelers, Hard Rock Hotel Amsterdam American will have a number of meeting spaces totaling over 2,400 square feet, as well as brand-signature amenities, such as a Body Rock fitness centre. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase t-shirts, hats and other branded apparel at the Rock Shop, and the hotel will also offer The Sound of Your Stay music amenity program, the brand’s signature three-part offering, which allows guests to stream or download their choice of a rotating set of curated playlists upon check-in. Guests can also reserve their choice of Fender guitars delivered in-room for impromptu jam sessions or tune in to the vinyl resurgence and experience music as it was intended to be listened to. Guests can also enjoy the one-of-a-kind Rock Om in-room yoga program, which energizes the body and soul through the power of music.

The family-run company Eden Hotels will remain the owner of the property, according to Leon Dijkstra, the owner of the site of the project. 

The hotel will also be home to the Café Americain, taking up residence in a National Heritage site. The respected Café Americain holds great historical value and will become a hotspot for guests, tourists and locals alike to enjoy a delicious American breakfast, lunch or dinner under its iconic arched roof, Hard Rock said. Guests may also indulge in a drink at the on-site Bar Americain. The hotel will also have a GMT + 1 lobby lounge serving craft cocktails and artisan coffees.

Surrounding the hotel is a variety of local cafes, restaurants, theaters and bars. Guests can also explore some of Amsterdam’s most prominent museums, including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum, all within walking distance.

INNSiDE by Meliá to Expand to Prague

Meliá Hotels International has announced plans to open the INNSiDE Prague Old Town, its latest property and first hotel in the Czech capital, this March. Meliá said the new property is part of the INNSiDE by Meliá brand’s pivot to design-led lifestyle and resort hotels with a "bleisure" focus. This year, INNSiDE is evolving to provide spaces for travelers looking to combine work and pleasure, while focusing on sustainability.

INNSiDE Prague Old Town Hotel will have 90 rooms, all with the attributes of the INNSiDE by Meliá brand. This includes in-room amenities, such as bathrobes, slippers and flip flops, a coffee machine, complimentary minibar, with fresh juices and local beer and Smeg fridges packed full of healthy treats, drinks and snacks. Superior+ rooms will also have high-end sound systems, complimentary streaming services and complimentary bike rental to encourage guests to explore the local area.

Aimed at both business and leisure travelers, the hotel is within easy access to Vaclav Havel International Airport, a little over nine miles away, and metro, bus and train stations all a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Visitors wishing to explore the city will find all the main tourist attractions within easy reach, according to Meliá. The Powder Tower, one of the ancient gateways to the city, is only a few minutes’ walk from the INNSIDE Prague Old Town Hotel, and just a short distance further is the Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter and Wenceslas Square, some of the biggest tourist attractions in Prague. To encourage guests to discover new neighborhoods, they will have access to INNSiDE city guides, with local sights and tips.

With health and wellness a key focus point for the brand, INNSiDE Prague Old Town will offer a gym with fitness suites and digital fitness software. The hotel will have an open lobby space for meetings, whether social or business, as well as creative meeting room spaces, including a cinema, wellness studio and recording studio, which can be hired for events and functions.

The INNSiDE by Meliá brand portfolio has 38 hotels in 20 countries, 20 in operation and 18 in the pipeline. Gabriel Escarrer, executive vice president and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, said that INNSiDE Prague Old Town will be one of the first hotels to offer all of the new attributes and sustainable features of the INNSiDE brand.

Relaunching in 2019, INNSiDE by Meliá will offer a range of design-led lifestyle and resort hotels aimed at guests traveling for work or leisure. The group said it recognized an opportunity to target Millennials in the mid-scale lifestyle category by expanding into resort-led destinations, where the lines between work and leisure are becoming more fluid.

Airport Hotels: JFK's TWA Hotel Opens for Bookings on Valentine's Day

The TWA Hotel, the product of a resoration of the historic TWA terminal building at JFK Airport in New York City, began accepting its first guest reservations on Valentine's Day, February 14.

The hotel’s 512 midcentury modern-inspired guestrooms — housed in brand new buildings behind the 1962 Eero Saarinen-designed landmark that will be the heart of the hotel — are available beginning May 15, 2019, the TWA Hotel’s soft opening. A grand opening celebration will be thrown in the fall. Room rates start at $249.

This spring, the TWA Hotel will also offer reservations for shorter day stays, providing JFK travelers on layovers a place to shower, catch up on email with free fast Wi-Fi, have a meal at The Paris Café by Jean-Georges and hit the 10,000-square-foot-gym or rooftop pool before heading into Manhattan for meetings. “Restoring the TWA Hotel is a labor of love for our entire team,” said Tyler Morse, CEO of MCR and MORSE Development, in a written statement. “We are counting down the days until the landmark building, dark since 2001, is filled with life again.”

The TWA Hotel, JFK Airport’s only on-airport hotel, will have:

- Six restaurants and eight bars, including The Paris Café by Jean-Georges
- An Intelligentsia coffeebar and coffee carts throughout the hotel grounds
- High-end retail outlets
- 50,000 square feet of event space, including a 15,000-square-foot ballroom
- A rooftop pool and observation deck
- A 10,000-square-foot fitness center
- A Lockheed Constellation L-1649A transformed into a cocktail lounge
