Supplier News: New in Massachusetts, Maryland

A big new resort opening and an event space revamp lead this week's supplier news in the meetings and events industry.

Now Booking: MGM Springfield

Reservations are now open for rooms and suites at a major new event property in New England: the MGM Springfield, which opens August 24. The first gaming resort in Massachusetts, the MGM Springfield will have 252 guest rooms, including 16 suites.

It will also have an 8,000 seat entertainment value, as well as 42,500 square feet of event space for meeting planners. The new resort is set in Springfield’s downtown area, 80 miles west of Boston with immediate access to Interstate 91 and the Mass. Pike, as well as nearby Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Conn. and the Amtrak-serviced Union Station.

Other notable amenities include:

Accommodations – The boutique-style five-story hotel will have 250 guestrooms inspired by the history, architecture and literary legacy of its urban surroundings. Each space will incorporate details such as quotations from the works of Emily Dickinson and Merriam-Webster-inspired works of art.

Dining Experiences – Food and beverage options will include Cal Mare by James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Mina; steaks and seafood at The Chandler Steak House with Hell's Kitchen season 14 winner Meghan Gill serving as executive chef; MGM's signature TAP Sports Bar; and the South End Market off Main Street.

Entertainment – The 8,000-seat MassMutual Center is MGM Springfield's official entertainment venue, serving as the home for large-scale conventions and events. MGM Resorts said it will leverage its pipeline of global relationships to attract events and entertainment. MGM Springfield also will partner with other local venues, such as Symphony Hall, for live events.

Relaxation – Guests can tee up at MGM Springfield's Topgolf Swing Suite, a new social gathering spot with immersive golf simulators and a lounge. The resort also will have an eight-screen movie theater complex; 10-lane bowling center; spa; and an 8,000-square-foot pool in a terraced rooftop garden.

Retail – The resort's retail lineup on street level will include the first-ever apparel boutique from Indian Motorcycle – the Springfield-born pioneer of the American motorcycle industry – and Kringle Candle.

Open-Air Plaza – Inspired by the classic New England town common, MGM Springfield will have an outdoor plaza and thriving public space, with the Revolutionary War-era Springfield Armory at its center. The historic United States arsenal will offer a backdrop for the open-air marketplace, which will host live events, local artisans, farmers markets and seasonal programming, including an outdoor ice rink. The plaza will aim to serve as an anchor for the neighborhood's pedestrian crowd, encouraging guests to explore the local businesses and attractions nearby.

Art – A public fine art program inspired by the industrial ethos of Springfield will host a collection of commissioned and curated pieces by international and local artists from Springfield, the greater Berkshires, New England and beyond. The property also will have an exclusive exhibit, "Cabinet of Curiosities: Springfield Innovations from the Springfield Museums," curated in partnership with the Springfield Museums to showcase turn-of-the-century objects throughout the resort, such as a 1925 Edison Western Union Stock Ticker, a 1915 Springfield-made Telegraphone and an 1895 Edison Home Phonograph.

Casino – A 125,000-square-foot gaming floor will have approximately 2,550 slot machines, 120 gaming tables, a poker room and high-limit VIP gaming area for a variety of experiences.

Maryland Events: Chesapeake Bay Beach Club to Expand

Chesapeake Bay Beach Club on Maryland’s eastern shore has announced it will complete construction on the second phase of The Inn at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, a multi-million dollar property expansion that includes the late summer 2018 opening of The Barn, a standalone farm-style building featuring 18 guest rooms and suites, and late fall 2018 opening of The Cottages, an enclave of five distinct, one-bedroom luxury bungalows.

Located less than one hour from Washington, DC, and Baltimore at the base of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the property serves as a venue for waterfront weddings, special events and corporate functions. It has 54 guest rooms and suites, wellness-focused treatments at the full service spa and salon, and more than 30,000 sq. ft. of flexible meeting and event space. Multiple dining options include The Market, a gourmet cafe and marketplace specializing in locally sourced small bites, and Knoxie’s Table, a lively signature restaurant, serving seasonal cuisine.

For the expansion The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club has partnered with DAS Architects, Ryan Associates, Restoration Hardware and Southern Living on the design of The Barn and The Cottages, and worked exclusively in collaboration with Restoration Hardware on the interior design elements, which have all Restoration Hardware furnishings, fixtures and accessories.

Overlooking four acres of gardens, courtyards, fire pits, fountains and activity lawns, The Barn will sit directly across from The Inn at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, complimenting the property’s existing structures, while completing the initial Inn quad. Tucked slightly further behind The Barn, The Cottages will have an open bedroom and living room layout, a full bathroom with soaking tub and powder room, as well as an individual guest entry through a private covered porch with rocking chairs.

Additional property enhancements include a multi-pool Splash Garden, slated to open late summer 2018, as well as two Himalayan Salt Stone Saunas, scheduled to open fall 2018 at The Spa. Located adjacent to the Potting Shed and within the Hops Garden, the Splash Garden will have two 20’x 20’ by 4’ deep azure dipping pools with in-pool seating, as well as lounge and deck seating. All pool decks will be handicap accessible.
