Marriott Launches Major Sustainability Initiative

Meeting planners interested in booking sustainable events may want to take note of Marriott International’s newly launched sustainability initiative, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction. The new sustainability and social impact platform seeks to continue the company’s 90-year commitment to the communities it serves, the planet and people worldwide.

Guided by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, Marriott created Serve 360 to guide the company's commitment and deliver positive results through four priority areas or "coordinates":

  • Nurture Our World – Advancing the resiliency and development of our communities.
  • Sustain Responsible Operations – Reducing the company's environmental impacts, sourcing responsibly and building and operating sustainable hotels.
  • Empower Through Opportunity – Helping people prepare for jobs in the hospitality industry.
  • Welcome All & Advance Human Rights – Creating a safe and welcoming world for associates and travelers alike.

Marriott's new goals are being woven into the company across continents, from its global development organizations to its global supply chain networks. Some of the company's commitments by 2025 include:

  • Reduce water by 15 percent, carbon by 30 percent, waste by 45 percent and food waste by 50 percent
  • Contribute 15 million associate volunteer hours, 25 percent of which will be skills-based, to capitalize on personal talents and core business skills
  • Train 100 percent of associates to know the signs of human trafficking
  • Embed human rights criteria in recruitment and sourcing policies

Tricia Primrose, global chief communications officer at Marriott International and the Serve 360 Executive Leadership Council Co-Chair, said that the new initiatives builds off of Marriott’s 2007 sustainability goals.

New Special Event Venue in Maryland: Foxfire

Foxfire, a new event venue set on 127 acres in Maryland’s historic Harford County horse country is set to begin hosting events this fall. Only four large exclusive events will be allowed annually, as well as a limited number of small gatherings.

With facilities for special and unique weddings, birthday parties, bar/bat mitzvahs, corporate retreats, holiday functions or simply a weekend away with family and friends, events at Foxfire will be able to enjoy sweeping views, sprawling grounds, enchanting ponds and a fully restored, landmarked country estate. The venue is about 40 minutes north of Baltimore and 75 minutes from Washington, D.C. Guests arrive at the property and enter along a quarter mile ancient maple tree lined drive, as they approach the manor house. For weddings, couples can choose to exchange vows under a trellis draped in wisteria or in front of one of the property’s quarries, and continue the celebration on an expansive rear lawn. With a variety of locations that can accommodate up to 300 guests, couples are able to host a full range of events at Foxfire beyond their wedding including a welcome reception, rehearsal dinner or Sunday brunch.

The grounds are landscaped with American maples, boxwoods, poplars and London planes. Manicured gardens bloom with peonies, roses and poppies, while yellow and lavender wildflowers color the countryside. A historic horse breeding and training farm, Foxfire still has working barns and paddocks, with its estate situated at the center of the property.

Built in 1932, the Manor House underwent a restoration in 2017. The colonial style estate has a clean white exterior accented by Charleston Green shutters and more than 8,000 square feet of interior living space. There are six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and six fireplaces throughout the home, a large pool and two quarries, one of which is also a swimming hole. A restored chapel serves as an additional two-story guest cottage, and has two bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. It also overlooks a hidden quarry.

Large events at Foxfire require a rental fee of $100,000, which includes ceremony and reception options for up to 300 guests, accommodations for 18 guests in the Manor Home and guest cottage over five nights, daily housekeeping, onsite host, personal chef, use of the property for multiple events during a wedding weekend, a stay for two at The Ranch 4.0, and the opportunity for the wedding couple to return every five years to renew vows or celebrate an anniversary. Pricing for small groups is based on the group’s specific needs.
