Supplier News: A Big New Luxury Venue in China

From the new Sanya Edition in China to venue updates and packages around the world, here’s the latest meetings industry supplier news to keep on your radar. 

The Sanya Edition Opens in China

In China, the newest addition to Ian Schrager’s Edition luxury hotel brand has opened with a 14,000 square foot Grand Ballroom with seating for 900 guests, making it one of the largest ballroom spaces in Haitang Bay. The space has views of the surrounding forest, teak-floored rooms and louvered wood panel walls opening onto a sunken courtyard and garden. Adjacent to the meeting center is amphitheater offering a setting for open-air concerts and events.

The Sanya Edition is situated on Hainan Island, off the coast of southern China, set within 50 acres of tropical greenery. It has a 20,000 square meter private ocean overlooking the South China Sea and 512 residential-style guest rooms, including 46 suites and an additional 17 villas on a terraced hillside, each of which has a private pool and private outdoor space. All guest rooms have ocean views. 

For dining Market at Edition serves a menu that reference’s Sanya’s history as a trading port, while The Jade Egret serves up cocktails, craft beers and premium wines to pair with a selection of appetizers, including Peking duck pancakes, hand rolls or small plates inspired by Spanish tapas. 

There is also a poolside rooftop bar with an open-plan layout designed to promote socializing, plus a lifestyle shop co-curated by UCCA (Ullens Center for Contemporary Art) Beijing and Steven Giles of Miami Edition

“Enhance Your Meeting Experience” Promotion at The Chase Park Plaza

The Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis, MO, is offering planners a new “Enhance Your Meeting Experience” promotion on new programs booked and consumed by April 21, 2017. 

The offer for groups with at least 20 room nights at the hotel includes up to four enhancements, based on the number of room nights contracted. Groups with 20-49 room nights contracted will receive their choice of one enhancement. Groups with 50-100 room nights contracted will receive their choice of two enhancements. Those with 101-250 room nights will receive three enhancements, and groups of 251-500+ room nights will receive their choice of four enhancements.

Enhancements include 10 VIP upgrades; 20 percent attrition; 10 percent off A/V rental; one complimentary room per 30 rooms contracted; complimentary one-hour cocktail reception; and one free future day meeting for up to 10 people inclusive of meeting rooms and full breaks. In addition, any group that books over 400 room nights add two free domestic coach air fares (up to a maximum of $1,000) to be used in conjunction with the booking, along with the choice of four enhancements.

Audio visual rental includes equipment only, and excludes labor. The complimentary reception includes beer, wine, and hors d’oeuvres

The 338-room hotel has more than 65,000 square feet of meeting space, along with an 18,000-square-foot Santé Fitness & Wellness Center, the full-service Aveda Salon & Spa, a five-screen movie theater, an outdoor heated resort-style pool, three dining options (such as The Preston restaurant), and indoor parking.

New Courtyard Hotel in Toledo, Ohio

In other hotel news, the new Courtyard by Marriott Toledo-North is set to debut November 16 with 600 square feet of meeting space that can accommodate functions of up to 35 people. 

The 97-room hotel also has hybrid zones for working, sleeping, relaxing and getting ready in guest rooms, as well as a business-friendly lobby environment with media pods, complimentary Wi-Fi and a variety of seating zones. The business library has several computer terminals, along with a printer and separate computer stations dedicated solely to printing airline boarding passes and checking flight status, and the rest of the hotel includes an indoor swimming pool, fitness center and guest laundry.

New Group Meetings Offerings at the Grand Hyatt New York

In New York City, the Grand Hyatt New York has introduced a variety of meetings offerings and teambuilding activities available exclusively for group clients, including a rewards package and exclusive experiences at key New York City landmarks Grand Central Terminal, One World Observatory and the flagship Macy’s Herald Square.

The 1,306-room hotel has over 50 meeting rooms and 60,000 square feet of meeting space, and can accommodate groups of up to 1,500 people. 

As part of the new 70 Rooms on Peak - New (York) Offer, meeting and event planners who book a new meeting by December 31, 2016 with 70 or more paid guestrooms will receive the following rewards:

Additionally, groups can check out exclusive audio tours of Grand Central Terminal, which is directly connected to the hotel. Tours last from 30 to 75 minutes based on a choice of a “local” or “express” tour. The hotel has also partnered with One World Observatory, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, to offer discounted tickets for groups in an experience that includes a walk-through video montage, a sky pod elevator, panoramic skyline views from the 100th floor, and the Observatory Sky Portal, a clear, 14-foot glass disc with views onto the city 100 stories below. Presidential Inauguration Package at JW Marriott Washington DC

Finally, for groups looking to check out the presidential inauguration, the JW Marriott in Washington, DC, is offering a $2.5 million buy-out that bundles 325 guest rooms, four presidential suites, a rooftop party for 300 overlooking the inaugural parade and $400,000 in food and beverage credit.

New Venue: Palazzo Lavaca, Austin

One of the oldest buildings in Austin, the Palazzo Lavaca has been reimagined as an event venue after a huge renovation that also pays tribute to the building’s 130 years of history. 

Most of the building’s original features were kept, with the longleaf pine floors resorted, the old 1905 Otis elevator (originally controlled by a hand pulley) refurbished, and the walls scraped down to get to what is believed to be the original green color while exposing patches of brits and concrete. The building’s trademark Capital Saddlery boot still hangs from the front. 

Planners looking to book an event can choose from five distinct spaces: an open-air courtyard, a Violet Flame Bar, a Grand Ballroom, a Great Room, and a media lounge. There is also a state-of-the-art kitchen.

Angler & Ale at Hawks Cay Resort Opens in The Florida Keys

In other new venue news, the new Angler & Ale restaurant at Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys has opened with space for groups of up to 88 people. 

The restaurant has two private indoor dining areas — a large room for groups of 66 and a smaller room for parties of 22. 

The menu focuses on craft beer and locally sourced seafood. Groups who opt for the “Hook N’ Cook” experience will have the chance to bring back their fresh catches from their fishing excursion and have the chef prepare a customized dish. There is also an outdoor deck with two fire pits surrounded by lounge chairs. 

Hawks Cay Resort has the largest meeting space in the Keys, with seven outdoor and 13 indoor venues.

New Team Building Program in New York

Finally, in incentive news, Doral Arrowwood Resort and True North Team Building have launched a new The Remarkable Race program. The competition, based loosely on the highly popular TV program, The Amazing Race, focuses on collaboration, risk vs. reward and time management through a series of team challenges. This activity can be customized for an organization or to a meeting theme.  

The exercise can be held indoors or outside, where participants can roam the Doral Arrowwood’s 114 acres. Located 30 miles north of Manhattan, the Doral Arrowwood Resort offers conference facilities, 369 newly-renovated rooms, dining options and an array of recreational facilities including a championship golf course, tennis, hiking, an indoor/outdoor pool and a fully-equipped fitness center. The Remarkable Race package, which includes Doral Arrowwood’s complete meeting package components, is planned from Sunday through Monday or Tuesday.

The Remarkable Race Package is priced from $399 per person for groups of 30 or more and includes both the Doral Arrowwood’s value-added comprehensive meetings package and the Remarkable Race teambuilding program. This special package is available for meetings to take place before March 31, 2017.

Now Open: Conrad Chicago

The new Conrad Chicago has officially opened its doors, bringing 10,000 square feet of conference and events space to the Magnificent Mile. The hotel’s central spiral staircase opens into a double height atrium lounge and leads directly to a series of pre-function and event spaces. There are 10 multifunction meeting rooms with 360-degree views, natural light, and state-of-the-art technology. 

Planners will be able to check out 3D imaging of the spaces on Social Tables soon. 

The hotel also has 287 guest rooms, including 24 suites and two hospitality suites, as well as three restaurants by Chef Richard Sandoval: Baptiste & Bottle, Noyane, and Il Tavolino. Il Tavolino is inspired by Italian cafés and also offers a speciality coffee program in partnership with local roaster Metropolis. Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu features breakfast sandwiches, artisan pastries, pizza, salad, pasta, shareable snacks, and fresh pressed juices. Baptiste & Bottle is on the 20th floor and serves American cuisine and a bourbon centric beverage program for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Slated to open in summer 2017, Noyane will be the hotel’s Japanese rooftop restaurant, offering Japanese cuisine, sushi, sashimi, sakes and beer.

$70 Million Renovation at ONE UN New York

In New York, the historic ONE UN just wrapped a $70 refresh of its 439 guest rooms and suites, meeting and event spaces, public areas and Ambassador Grill Restaurant and Bar. Design enhancements aimed to spotlight the hotel’s original look from when it started welcoming world leaders, diplomats and heads of state in 1976.
