New and newly renovated meeting spaces on both sides of the Atlantic lead today’s meetings and events industry news.

Hilton to Open First Curio Hotel in Washington, DC

Hilton has announced the signing of The Darcy, Curio Collection by Hilton, to its Curio Collection of boutique hotels. The new hotel, which is the Collection’s first in Washington, DC, is slated to open in mid-2017.

The hotel will have approximately 5,500 square feet of meeting space, which will allow for flexible room sizes and include contemporary, state-of-the-art audio visual options. The hotel is a ten-minute walk from Metro stations at Dupont Circle and McPherson Square and three miles from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The 226-room hotel is in the heart of Washington, D.C., just off Scott Circle. Only three blocks from Dupont Circle and Logan Circle, and six blocks from the White House, The Darcy’s central location will allow guests to easily visit the city’s many monuments, attractions and museums, including the Verizon Center and Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Hilton said.

The Darcy’s design will focus on clean and classic architecture with accents of distressed metals and bright colors. Subtle cherry blossom patterns and abstract artwork of magnolias will connect the hotel to D.C.

Chefs Robert Wiedmaier and Brian McBride created the hotel’s restaurant, Siren, which will serve locally sourced ingredients paired with fresh seafood. Lil’ B, an intimate coffee shop and eatery, will be led by celebrity Chef David Guas, who brings his New Orleans style to the cafe. Additional amenities will include a fitness center, business services, room service, valet parking, concierge services and programming with business and leisure travelers in mind.

Major Renovation at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London

Across the pond, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has embarked on a comprehensive multimillion-dollar restoration of its European flagship Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London. The hotel remains open throughout the renovation, which will be completed in spring 2018.

The hotel’s restaurants and bars, together with the Ballroom and meeting facilities, will undergo a soft refurbishment. Internationally renowned designer, Joyce Wang, has been commissioned to oversee the overall design concept, and has taken her inspiration from the hotel’s royal heritage and peaceful park side location, as well as the glamour of the early 20th century’s Golden Age of travel. Joyce Wang also oversaw the recent renovation of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

All 181 rooms and suites will also be refreshed, encompassing details inspired by the building’s Edwardian heritage and the natural beauty of Hyde Park. Art Deco inspired features including curated artworks and custom-designed furniture, will aim to create a warm and inviting environment. In addition, two new penthouse suites will be created, with private terraces and extensive park views. The hotel’s entrance, main lobby and reception areas will be reconfigured and redesigned to maximize natural daylight, and the building’s façade will be revitalized.

In keeping with the recently installed contemporary pool and fitness area, Adam D. Tihany has been appointed to oversee the design of the next-generation Spa at Mandarin Oriental, London, which will be significantly expanded to include couples’ facilities and an exclusive Mandarin Oriental Spa Studio concept, offering express beauty and grooming treatments for both men and women.
