New convention center hotels in Marrakech and Boston, a buy-out program at the Four Seasons Resort Nevis and a Los Angeles virtual reality experience for meeting professionals are the four headlines to follow today in the meetings and events industry.

Deal Close on Boston Convention Center Hotel

The Boston Globe reports that the Massachusetts Port Authority could be close to a deal for a 1,000+-room convention center hotel in South Boston. While Governor Charlie Baker nixed plans to expand the convention center across Summer Street last year, a new potential deal sees Boston real estate developer Davis Cos. and Omni Hotels & Resorts emerging as the top bidder for the project.

Exact project details were not disclosed, but the size of the property could exceed 1,000 rooms, making it among the largest hotels in the city. In a change from the 2015 plan, no public subsidy will reportedly be needed to build or operate the hotel.

Mövenpick Opens Convention Center Hotel in Marrakech

In Marrakech, Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts has opened the new Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech following a $100 million redevelopment.

The 503-room luxury hotel has direct access to the Palais des Congrès Marrakech, and has already been confirmed as he host venue for several major global events, including COP22 and the Festival International de Film de Marrakech. The hotel also has a flexible function space of 5,600 square meters, including exhibition floor space of 2,700 square meters, a 1,700 square meter Royal Ballroom, two auditoriums with seating for up to 1,489 guests, 20 meeting rooms and outdoor event areas.

All of the hotel’s guest rooms and suites have private balconies, and come in types ranging from family, business and executive rooms to 108 interconnecting rooms and additional suites housed in a newly built wing. For dining, there are five restaurants and a rooftop lounge bar, with each venue meant to represent a chapter of Sultan Al Mansour Eddahbi’s history – from fine Moroccan cuisine at Dahbi, barbecue feasts at Jamra Bar & Grill, and the caidal tent setting of Saray, to Mediterranean specialities at Medi Terra, light bites and products from Mövenpick Fine Foods at the Nozha Coffee Shop & Takeaway or evenings at the Manso Bar & Lounge on the rooftop.

The hotel’s Ô de Rose spa is under the direction of the Cinq Mondes brand, offering eight treatment cabins, hammams, a sauna, steam showers, Jacuzzi, nail studio and hair salon spread across two floors. Wellness experiences include purifying hammam rituals using traditional indigenous products such as argan oil, beldi black soap and rhassoul mud, and a Saadi ancestral ritual based on essential Draâ oils, which originate from the region where Mansour Eddahbi was born.

New Group Buyout Program at Four Seasons Resort Nevis

In the Caribbean, the Four Seasons Resort Nevis has launched a new Exclusively Nevis resort buyout program for groups.

The hotel’s Conference Services Professionals will help event planners curate the resort’s options of a meeting and incentive experience. Buyouts require a minimum group size of 150 guest rooms for programs of four nights and longer. The resort also has 50 multi-bedroom luxury villas, which groups can add in order to accommodate VIPs and create unique events in a different setting.

When in Nevis, meetings and incentives planners can take advantage of any location on the Resort’s 350-acre property. The half-mile stretch of Pinney’s Beach in front of the resort also can be converted into a venue for daytime activities, dinners and late-night beach parties. Additionally, Exclusively Nevis groups can use more than 3,000 square feet of outdoor terrace as well as 5,000 square feet of indoor meetings space, which can be configured into five break outs.

Special amenities for groups include welcoming greeters at the airport, private speedboats that take guests to the Resort’s on-property pier and custom-created culinary experiences that focus on individual preferences and fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Events can also incorporate the resort’s Spa at Four Seasons Resort Nevis, where treatments incorporate traditional Nevis herbs and plants. The Spa also has an outdoor garden, volcanic stone whirlpool and Japanese-inspired, cold-plunge pool offering views of Nevis Peak. Guests can also enjoy the Robert Trent Jones II, 18-hole golf course and 10 tennis courts – both hard and clay courts.
