Monterey Begins Construction on Conference Center

Construction is underway on a $60 million improvement project for the Monterey Conference Center. Plans call for gutting the building, reconfiguring the interior and adding a new two-story glass entryway. Construction is expected to continue through fall 2016.

When it reopens in early 2017, the Monterey Conference Center will offer more flexible meeting space, more usable pre-function space, new technological improvements, and the ability to host multiple meetings simultaneously in a LEED-certified building, City of Monterey officials said in a release announcing the project.

During construction, one lane of Del Monte Avenue from Tyler Street to Pacific Street will be closed to traffic to accommodate heavy equipment and construction vehicles entering and leaving the work site. A portion of the Portola Plaza in front of the Conference Center will be fenced off for a construction staging area. The remainder of the Plaza will remain open for Portola Hotel & Spa guests to check in and out of the hotel. Public access through the Alvarado Mall to Custom House Plaza, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Recreation Trail and the Waterfront will remain open.

Adjacent hotels, the Portola Hotel & Spa and the Monterey Marriott, do not expect to be affected by the remodel and are open for business.
