Children’s Hospital benefits from NEC Group fundraising

Employees from the NEC Group, Birmingham, have raised an impressive £36, 627 over the last 12 months for their nominated charity, Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Red Balloon Appeal.

Dedicated staff took part in activities ranging from a sale of home-baked cakes, to running the New York Marathon. Five members of the NEC’s traffic division even undertook a gruelling five-day, 120-mile kayaking challenge along the River Severn, raising £1,500.

Paul Thandi, NEC Group chief executive, said: “Every year, employees from across our venues and business areas go the extra mile to make a difference to someone else’s quality of life through our nominated charity. This figure represents a phenomenal fund-raising effort, and I am immensely proud of every single person who has taken part in these activities.

“As a business, we have a very strong sense of social responsibility, and while in previous years we have been able to contribute towards national charities, I am exceptionally pleased that this year we can donate to a deserving cause based in Birmingham.”

Commenting on the NEC Group’s contribution, Paul O’Connor, chief executive of Birmingham Children’s Hospital, said: “The NEC Group has become such a good friend to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and we are extremely grateful for their generous donation. Without the help of companies such as The NEC Group, our goal to make BCH the very best healing environment in the world for young patients would be less of a reality, therefore, my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed.”

The money raised will be used to improve services across the hospital and could purchase items from highly specialised mattresses, hoists, and electric cots, to weighing scales. The donation could contribute towards a brand new Ultrasound machine for the hospital’s radiology department, or a Pulse Oximiter which measures blood to oxygen levels, for 20 wards.

Fundraising work for The NEC Group’s nominated charity for 2009 – Marie Curie Cancer Care – has already begun.
