Americas: The Stalling of Strategic Meetings Management
by Shimon Avish, President, Shimon Avish Consulting LLC
In previous pieces I have written about how important I think strategic meetings management is, and what I think should be included in an SMM program. And yet, it seems to me that the spread of SMM has stalled. For the purposes of this discussion, I define an SMM program as consisting of:
• a comprehensive meetings policy (or guidance)
• centralized and standardized sourcing and planning processes and procedures that are implemented enterprise-wide
• a meetings technology platform that is configured to support the policy/guidance and the processes and procedures.
Before becoming involved in meetings management, I was involved in travel management, starting a few weeks after my son, now a college freshman, was born. At that time the travel industry was living through the early pangs of consolidation, and this rationalization of suppliers proceeded apace, with the usual division of adopters into innovators, early, early majority, late majority, and laggards.
