UK: New Brighton Conference Centre Still "A Long Way Off"

Plans for a new 10,000-capacity conference centre on Brighton seafront are still “a long way off”, according to the council.

Last year, councillors from all three main parties gave their support to the £540 million Waterfront development that would see an exhibition and live performance venue created at the seafront Black Rock site, close to Brighton Marina.

The plans would involve a 10,000 capacity venue created to replace the 4,500 capacity Brighton Centre and the expansion of the city’s Churchill Square shopping centre onto the current Brighton Centre site.

This week, council leader Warren Morgan said he was keen to get sign off on the Waterfront development by the end of the calendar year.

However, Howard Barden, the council’s head of tourism and venues, said that no timescales had been finalised and Brighton Centre was continuing to take bookings as normal.

Barden said: “We are keen to see the Waterfront development progress but as no timescales have yet been finalised for the project we’re continuing to book events into the future as normal.
