UK: Industry Welcomes "Whole UK" Tourism Plan

The meetings industry has welcomed the government's plans to grow tourism, saying a whole-UK approach is the right way to increase the sector.

EVCOM and the Business Visits & Events Partnership (BVEP) say the plan will benefit business tourism, but warned it is now up to Prime Minister David Cameron to turn his words into actions.

EVCOM chair Marco Forgione said: "Reaching out beyond London is absolutely necessary. We've got tremendous facilities and leaders around the UK and we need to encourage a whole UK approach to marketing and promoting the tourism.

"It needs greater coordination and some of that can be done relatively simply, but it needs more than just fine words. It needs to be a real impetus and there needs to be funding support to make this happen."

The government announced a five-point plan to increase tourism, which includes bringing together the 'fragmented' tourism sector, improving the border welcome, investing in better transport links out of London, focusing on skills and jobs within the sector and reforming regulations to improve access.
