UK: Industry Laments 'Missed Opportunities' in Budget

There was talk of welcome measures and missed opportunities as the final budget before the General Election received a mixed reaction across the events industry.

Apprentice schemes were given help and the International Festival of Business received a £1.5m boost, but it was also felt that the chancellor George Osborne could have gone further to help the UK industry.

EVCOM CEO Marco Forgione said: “There were some positive changes announced which help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and National Insurance changes which help freelancers. 

“The changes to the apprenticeships and encouragement for skills development are to be welcomed particularly as our proposal for an Apprenticeship Trailblazer has been given the ministerial go-ahead.”

However, Forgione lamented a lack of support for communications and business tourism, adding: “The chancellor missed an opportunity to recognise that the communication landscape has changed and content creation has moved on substantially. This sector should be supported and encouraged.
