UK: Is Your Event "Stuck in Fast-Forward?"
Event managers should consider applying the philosophies of slowness and mindfulness to their conference design, MD of a Preston-based event company has said.
Writing for the Event Manager Blog, Becki Cross, managing director of Events Northern, says many planners are guilty of trying to cram too much into event programmes.
“As an event manager I see it as my duty to create an efficient and flowing schedule strongly focused on the content with, dare I say it, almost perfunctory breaks throughout the day. Recently though I have begun to question whether this is actually the right approach? I started to think about how slowing down the pace and taking on board the slow philosophy could benefit the events we organise.”
Cross has identified a number of areas, which she believes could lead to more fulfilling events, including putting far greater importance on networking and ‘slow conversation’. Serving a sit-down two or three course lunch could facilitate deep conversation, she says, while switching off phones and discouraging Tweeting would enable delegates to be connected in the present moment.
