UK: Will Whitehorn to Succeed Sir Ian Grant as SECC Chairman

will whitehornSir Ian Grant has retired as chairman of the Scottish Exhibition Centre (SECC) after 11 years in office, becoming the third senior figure to announce their departure from the venue in recent weeks.

Grant's exit follows that of sales director Ben Goedegebuure, who stepped down at the end of November, and CEO John Sharkey, who announced his plans to leave next Easter.
SECC has appointed president of Virgin Galactic and SECC non-executive director Will Whitehorn to take over as chairman of the Glasgow venue at the start of 2014.

Whitehorn founded Virgin Trains in 1996 and played a pivotal role in the global growth of the Virgin brand, acting as a spokesman for Sir Richard Branson before establishing the project to build the world’s first commercial spacecraft.

He said: “The company has performed extremely well in recent years, most noticeably with the opening of The SSE Hydro – a venue which is set to bring many exciting opportunities to Scotland. I am privileged to follow in the footsteps of Sir Ian Grant, whose guidance and leadership has taken the business to where it is today.”
