UK takes first steps to professionalise meetings and events industry

Events industry "movers and shakers" are being sought to support the development of the Institute of Event Management (IEM).

At a meeting in Birmingham (hosted by the NEC) 20 leading industry figures representing venues, leading trade associations, event academia and the public sector assembled to debate the merits and challenges of implementing a system of recognising experience and ability within the events sector.

The views of individuals working in all sectors of the events industry are being sought to ascertain whether there is genuine support for an association, which will recognise event management as a clearly defined profession.

Research for a proposed IEM is being undertaken under the auspices of the Business Visits & Events Partnership (BVEP) and aims to take the first steps towards professionalising the industry.

A team from the events course at the University of Buckingham will be compiling the results of a survey in time for the next meeting, scheduled to take place just before the start of this year’s Event UK exhibition. Anyone interested in undertaking the survey can do so by clicking here.

Susan Spibey ,of SJS Consultancy Services, who has been appointed to lead the IEM steering group, said anyone interested in longer-term sponsorship of the organisation would be welcome to meet the members of the group at a reception on 20 September at Birmingham NEC.

“Following our first meeting in July, we are now motoring with the IEM, and would like to meet some of the events industry ‘movers and shakers’ who might be interested in helping to get it off to a flying start,” she said. “A sponsor for the reception is also sought.”
