UK: Should There Be a Global Hotel Contract for Meeting Planners?
Zibrant MD Fay Sharpe has called for the introduction of a universal hotel contract for event planners.
Sharpe was speaking at the BDRC Continental Hotels Insight Forum in London, where she criticised the variation in hotel contracts between differing venues.
She said: “It’s been a bugbear of mine for 20 years, the complexity of actually getting a contract signed and how long it can take. As an industry we need to be smarter about how we work and take costs out.
“We need to introduce a global contract that’s simplified and fit for purpose. Rather than checking a 55-page contract in French, I’m just checking a one page addendum drawn up for that specific event. It’s about us being proactive rather than reactive.”
She added that during her time in the industry, the role of the event planner has changed phenomenally.
“In 25 years the process has changed dramatically. What we have to do collaboratively is look for things we can do to improve the process. Why is it nearly every single hotel has a different contract? It takes me and my team a long time to check the contract, meaning you have the pain of an elongated process. It costs all of us time and money.”
