UK: Scotland Raises £106m for Conference Fund

neil brownleeA bid fund set up to lure conferences to Scotland will generate more than £100 million for the country's economy in two years.

On the second anniversary of the launch of VisitScotland's Conference Bid Fund, Tourism Minister Fergus Ewing revealed 46 international association conferences have been secured before 2021.

The tourism body's investment of £936,000 has been matched by local authorities from around the country for selected not-for-profit conferences.

And the future congresses, which are set to attract around 62,000 delegates and cover everything from life sciences and education to food and drink and renewable energy, will bring in almost £106m in revenue.

“Business tourism is vital because, as a result of attracting business events, it helps grow the Scottish economy beyond tourism," said Ewing.

“In the last two years, VisitScotland’s Conference Bid Fund is bearing fruit, helping attract high-yield, high-spend international conferences to Scotland.”

Scotland’s four biggest cities - Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee - have all made use of the funding, with other conferences taking place in Perth, St Andrews, Stornoway and Shetland.
