UK: Planners Can Save Thousands on Meetings Outside of London

The cost of a residential meeting in Newcastle could be up to £12k cheaper than in London, according to the latest research from BDRC Continental.

A 50-delegate meeting in a mid-market hotel with one night’s accommodation could cost just £6,950 in Newcastle, a massive saving on the £19,450 quoted for London – the highest price quoted to BDRC’s researchers.

Costs for residential meetings in mid-market and upper full-service hotels were compared in eight major UK cities for the M&IT survey, published in the May/June edition. The price difference was almost as large in the upper full-service hotels, in which the cheapest, Birmingham, comes in at £11k cheaper than London. But, rising room rates in the regions mean the savings are not what they once were – Manchester’s rate hit £82.58 in February, while hoteliers in the North East registered a 5 per cent uplift.

Once figures have been weighted, with average figures from both price points calculated, London comes in at £16,780, while just £1,800 separates Edinburgh (£10,862) in second and Cardiff at the cheapest end of the scale.
