UK: London Hotel Rates Now 'Most Expensive in Europe'

Hotels in Leeds recorded the highest price rise in the UK and Ireland in 2014, with an average increase of 22 per cent likely due to the legacy of the Tour de France which set off from Yorkshire last summer.

According to hotel solutions provider HRS, rates continue to soar in Britain year-on-year - with London knocking Zurich off its top spot as Europe's priciest destination.

The firm's research shows the average price for hotel room nights grew solidly in all of the UK and Ireland’s major cities last year, compared with 2013; in contrast, the average room rates fluctuated significantly in cities across Europe.

London’s hotels followed closely behind Leeds, with rates rising by 16 per cent, with Birmingham hot on its heels with a 15 per cent hike. But only London broke the £100 barrier, with average room rates costing £126 per night. Edinburgh was the second most expensive city, with an average room rate of £99, according to HRS which analyzed bookings made via its portal.
