UK: Living Wage Campaign is as 'Important as Dolphin-Friendly Tuna’




Tim Chudley, MD of the Sundial Group, is campaigning for more venues to become Living Wage Accredited.

The Group’s Barnett Hill, in Surrey, became the first conference hotel to become accredited by the Living Wage Foundation earlier this year, in recognition of its efforts to increase rates of pay for all staff. 

Calculated by the Centre for Research in Social Policy, the living wage is pegged at £9.15 per hour in London and £7.85 in the rest of the UK. Although not enforceable, like the minimum wage, more than 1,400 companies and organisations across the country have committed to pay the living wage. 

Research by KPMG in November 2014 revealed the hospitality industry was the worst offender for failing to pay staff the living wage: 90 per cent of bar staff, 85 per cent of waiting staff and 80 per cent of catering and kitchen assistants live below the living wage.
