UK: Anti Arms-Trade Campaigners Target Clarion Events With Protest

Anti-arms trade campaignersClarion Events is Britain’s largest independent exhibitions group and its most high-profile work is with the defence industry, for which it operates the DSEI, ITEC and LAAD exhibitions.

Campaigners said that the protest at the firm's Mayfair office took place in response to reports that Clarion has been put up for sale. The occupation, which took place as staff were arriving to work and lasted about half an hour, aimed to alert potential buyers to the controversy involvement in the arms trade brings.

The campaigners held a mock auction of Clarion Events during the protest, as well as drumming, singing and chanting.

Anne-Marie O'Reilly of Stop the Arms Fair said: "We occupied the offices of Clarion's owners today with the promise that if you buy Clarion, you'll get us free. The horrific consequences of the arms trade should alone be enough to deter potential buyers, but we also want to make it clear that any buyers will have us to contend with.
