Scottish venue wins business tourism award

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau

The Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC) has won The Glasgow: Scotland with style Award for Best Business Tourism Company at a prestigious event, which recognises excellence within Scotland’s business community.

The SECC received the honour at the 19th Annual Scottish Council for Development & Industry (SCDI) Awards for Exports & Enterprise, where 700 guests packed the Glasgow Hilton to celebrate the best of Scottish success in international markets.

The award was made in recognition of the role SECC plays in attracting major conferences, exhibitions, concerts and events to Glasgow – the economic impact for the City as a result of the expenditure by visitors, exhibitors and organisers tops £347 million annually.

Speaking about the accolade, John Sharkey, group chief executive of the SECC, said: “To be recognised for our contribution to business tourism in Scotland is a fantastic honour and it is down to the hard work and commitment of our staff who strive to deliver an excellent service for our clients who have entrusted their business with us. It also reinforces our first-class credentials that earned us the title of Best UK Conference Centre.”

Meanwhile, Scott Taylor, chief executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented: “The SCDI awards recognise the very best of Scotland’s companies. The SECC is the national conference and exhibition centre for Scotland. Its contribution to the Scottish economy has outweighed every venue in Scotland, and the team at the SECC can be justifiably proud of their outstanding achievements.”

For the financial year 2007-2008, the SECC reported turnover at £16.4 million, up 4% on the previous year. A total of 46 conferences were held at the venue, including CIVICUS and the International Photosynthesis Conference, which attracted thousands of delegates from around the world. In addition, 153 concerts and 57 exhibitions were also staged.
