Meeting Planners Must Master Technology to Survive Sluggish Budgets

Sluggish increases to budgets and shorter lead times remain chief talking points in today’s events and meetings industry, but, according to Meeting Professionals International (MPI), increasingly the professionals doing the chatting will be those most able to grasp and use the latest technological advances.

In its latest Business Barometer report (December 2012), MPI revealed that remote access to meeting content has grown in popularity, resulting in a marked increase in the hiring of employees who have a strong working knowledge of new technology, increasingly the catalyst for “attendee interactivity, lower costs and better risk management".

The report added: “Mobile apps will be obligatory for up-to-date content delivery, meeting and event personalisation, pan-demographic and -geographic communications, on site security, ad-hoc networking and environmental responsibility.”

MPI members told the survey that they often felt overwhelmed by the new technology on offer, resulting “in the need to identify ‘necessary’ [apps, programmes, etc.] versus ‘interesting’ ones” but that the "majority of meeting professionals who employ [virtual and hybrid meetings] solutions report an overall increase in meeting and event participation and an improved ability to manage their budgets while expanding the reach of their meetings to more potential attendees".
