EVENTS:review article presented to NEC board

Andrew Morris, chief executive of the NEC Group, which runs one of the largest venues in the UK, was so impressed with a recent EVENTS:review article that he added it to his company’s board report.

Written by ER’s joint editor in chief Pete Roythorne, the piece reported on the decline in the traditional advertising media of TV, radio, newspapers and magazines, drawing the conclusion that some of the spend in these areas was moving into live and experiential marketing. However, Roythorne expressed his concern over whether the events industry would take full advantage of this great opportunity.

In a letter to EVENTS:review’s chief executive James Latham, Morris wrote: “When I read the article I had just drafted my board report and had made the same point – so I've taken the liberty of including your article in my report to add credence.

“The key issue was made in the last paragraph. Can our short-termist industry, historically more concerned with profit than investment, raise its game and respond to this opportunity by taking a chunk of market share away from advertising? My dad used to say that: ‘You have to speculate to accumulate.’ Never has this been truer.

“The NEC published it's Manifesto for Change last year, which sets out what we think needs to be done to stimulate customer confidence in our medium, and drive growth for the first time in over a decade. This approach has kick-started our regeneration as a business and is producing incredible results. Others will, no doubt, have their own perspective but we are all united by one stark truth. If you stop growing you start dying.”
