Events can help ward off the January blues

Monday 21 January is set to be the worst date in the 2008 calendar, according to psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall, and companies can boost the loyalty of their staff and stave off the fall in productivity that the January blues can bring by organising special events.

This is the date when the UK workforce, and many throughout Europe and beyond, will be at their lowest ebb, claims Arnall, as it’s the time when the weather takes its toll, broken New Year's resolutions hit home and credit card bills arrive – and it’s a Monday.

Consequently, Evolve Events has come up with the idea of encouraging corporate celebrating at this time of year rather than commiserating, to give companies and their employees a seasonal lift. As a result, the London-based creative events planning agency, which was the tour de force behind the BBC’s Super Sweet 16 programme focusing of the rise of teenage parties last year, is urging companies to "ditch the droll and celebrate in style".

This is a particularly apt approach to take with duty of care for the employee currently riding high on the business agenda, and Evolve is encouraging employers to celebrate with their teams to make Monday 21 January, in particular, a day to remember. Already on Evolve’s books for this date are wine tastings, a fondue feast and a Duvet at Work Day, where staff will be given neck and head massages and the in-house meeting room will be turned into a home cinema, with day beds, duvets, popcorn dispensers and a screening of the feel-good favourite When Harry Met Sally.

Philip Atkins, director of Evolve Events, said: “Lots of people are veering away from the traditional company Christmas party as there is so much going on at this time of year anyway. January not only represents a cheaper option, but there is also the opportunity for employers to really do something for their staff by cheering them up when they most need it!”
