2012 Olympic announcement will create business growth in Oxford

Conference Oxford's Chairman, Carl Woodall, is predicting a 20% rise in enquiries to the marketing office for the university and its colleges, following the announcement that Oxford University's sports facilities have been selected to appear in the London 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide for Athletes.

"The focus has naturally been on London as the destination for the 2012 Olympic Games, but this announcement will help to highlight that the Olympics is not just about our capital, there will be a ripple effect out to all the regions," said Woodall.

This was true of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney when the city of Melbourne saw an increase in business tourism before, during and after the games.

Woodall added: "Business people will be looking to the UK to hold their events because the spotlight is firmly on us. Oxford is just an hour outside of London so we are clearly in a great position to attract new business. I urge our members and businesses in Oxford to start making preparations early to maximise the business tourism benefits of the Olympics."

Recent research has already highlighted that events held at the university and its colleges in 2007 directly benefited the city of Oxford by more than £50 million.
