Social Media, Sharing Economy Top Event News of the Week

Social media and the sharing economy were top of mind in a series of case studies and new resources for event planners released this week. 

2015 ICCA Congress Builds Networking and Social Media

The 2015 ICCA Congress has released a case study on the growth of social media, networking and education at the recent event. 59 percent of delegates in a post-event survey indicated that they used social media before, during or after the event, with 70 percent of those attendees saying that social media helped increase the value of their event experience. 

Before the event, ICCA laid out four key goals for its social media: increase the value of the event for members; increase member interaction and connectivity; show members that didn't attend what they're missing; and online profiling to ICCA's other target groups, such as potential members, associations and press. Twitter was the primary platform of communication used during the event. 

ICCA said that its social media strategy for the event focused on using hashtags with a call to action, such as #RoadtoArgentina and #ICCAWorld. The event also personally involved its staff, to avoid the feeling of communicating with a corporate logo, and used advocacy marketing tool InGo to encourage delegates to personally invite their network for the event. Finally, the event shifted its overall approach from mostly creating content by itself to encouraging interacting and curating the best content from delegates and colleagues. 

New Sharing Economy Resource for Meeting Planners

Also this week, the German Convention Bureau (GCB) and the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC) partnered with the Fraunhofer Institute to create a new toolkit for meeting planners, the first outcome of the "Future Meeting Space Study." That two-year study aims to examine top social and technology trends and their influence on the events sector. 

The results of the study so far have been compiled into a catalogue highlighting 30 key innovations for meetings and events. Key trends include the rise of the sharing economy, which is pushing networking to become the main focus of events, and a growing spotlight on personalization as traditional program formats lose ground to events tailored to an individual participant's needs. The toolkit also looks at the exchange of information between industry veterans and newcomers, as well as technological innovations like 3D presentations, digital interpreters and holograms. Security remains top of mind in both virtual and real settings, and mobility and infrastructure support remain areas of concern. 

Microsoft's Real-Time Polling Platform Rebrands

In product news, Bing Pulse, Microsoft's self-service online voting and audience engagement service, rebranded this week. Since its launch at the end of last year, the platform has added additional features by integrating with other Microsoft products, such as Azure Media Services (video), Skype for Business (meetings), OneNote (sharing), Yammer (enterprise communications), and Power BI (analytics). The new free research features offer users deeper insights and unique ways to engage audiences, Microsoft said.
