Event Tech: Microsoft Launches New Large-Screen Tablet for Meetings, Groups

On Wednesday, Microsoft unveiled its latest upgrades to Windows, including a new feature that may prove useful for event organizers.

The new Windows 10 operating platform (skipping a generation from the much-maligned Windows 8) will be available on a new large-screen device called the Microsoft Surface Hub that functions like one of Microsoft's smaller Surface tablets. It can be mounted on the wall and used as a visualization tool during meetings and brainstorming sessions.

"Hardware innovations in multi-touch and digital inking, along with built-in cameras, sensors and microphones, let the Surface Hub take advantage of Windows 10, Skype for Business and Office 365," Microsoft stated in a release, and the technology will also aid in virtual or remote meetings.

Specifically, the Surface Hub uses digital white boarding; instant remote conferencing; the ability for multiple people to share and edit content on the screen from a laptop, tablet or phone; and a platform for large-screen apps.

Surface Hub will be available in two sizes — 55-inch and 84-inch, depending on the needs of the venue.

Good to know: A free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, who upgrade in the first year.
