Event services group secures biggest ever contract despite downturn

Proving that it can be fruitful to look outside your home market for business opportunities during a recession, events services specialists The Arena Group has bucked the UK economic trend by securing a contract worth £17 million from the organisers of the inaugural biennial Bahrain Airshow 2010.

The project involves constructing the buildings and interiors required for the event. The contract covers the 2010, 2012 and 2014 airshows, with the first taking place from 21-23 January 2010 at Sakhir Airbase in Bahrain.

Following a detailed and intensive tender process, joint organisers Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) of the Kingdom of Bahrain and Farnborough International (FIL), have awarded the contract to Arena Group and Lea International. The companies have combined their expertise to create ArenaLea, a new partnership that will realise the project in just six months.

“We are delighted to appoint ArenaLea as the contractor for constructing and fitting out our luxury chalets and related facilities for the airshow, which we believe will set a new standard in aerospace events worldwide for many years to come,” said Captain AbdulRahman Al Gaoud, undersecretary for CAA and executive chairman of the organising committee.

“The show has been specifically designed with aerospace industry requirements and views very much in mind, as we have listened to what the industry really wants and expects from an aerospace event. We very much look forward to welcoming visitors to the Airshow in Bahrain in 2010.”

With a proven track record in aerospace exhibitions, ArenaLea took the event brief and presented a detailed concept to showcase its vision of the permanent facilities for the airshow. These will include the show entrance, VIP enclosure, business chalets, restaurants, a media centre and assorted public area buildings.

The new design and quality provision within the facilities throughout the show were among the awarding body’s main criteria. Work will begin immediately on the manufacture of special high-quality custom-designed buildings.

ArenaLea will establish a Bahrain office to complement its existing presence in the region and enable it to take advantage of future business opportunities in Bahrain.

“We are very proud to have been entrusted with this prestigious event,” said Arena Structures managing director Grahame Muir. “This is our single biggest contract win and is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved with the ArenaLea Team.”

Commenting on the contract, Lea, managing director of Lea International, added: “This is the culmination of months of hard work for the whole team and I know that the final result will be the envy of the entire Aerospace community.”
