Sub-Saharan Africa: Africa’s Travel Indaba: The Continent’s Must-Attend Event

An exhibition that attracts over 7,000 delegates from across the world, Africa’s Travel Indaba is one of the largest touism marketing events on the continent’s calendar. Showcasing a diverse variety of products and services, it attracts both regional and international buyers and media. Taking place from 2-4 May, it brings exhibitors together at the Durban ICC and Durban Exhibition Centre – from accommodation and tour operators to game lodges, transport, online travel, luxury products and more.

“Africa’s travel indaba creates a platform that allows the world to do business with Africa, and I can assure you that business gets done at this trade show,” says Sisa Ntshona, CEO of SA Tourism, owners of the event. “A few years ago at Africa’s Travel Indaba we launched our Hidden Gems section, where new entrants could showcase their spectacular offerings and once again undiscovered gems will be on display.”

Jam-Packed Schedule

The busy programme kicks off with a Business Opportunity Networking Day (BONDay) on the 2nd, with each event tailored towards providing insights and creating networking opportunities for all delegates to transact.

The Hidden Gems pavilion will bring over 100 of South Africa’s Small and Medium Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) together to showcase their unique experiences and products. These gems are from each of SA’s nine provices and range from safari tour operators to day spas and township restaurants. Buyers are invited to set up appointments with these products during the show to meet and learn more about their offerings and clinch deals.

The much-anticipated Speed Marketing sessions will return, allowing buyers a change to meet with exhibitors who are grouped according to themes. Each of these exhibitors makes a short presentation to a room of buyers – an excellent way for attendees to learn more about exhibitors.

Introducing the Green Stand Awards

Africa’s Travel Indaba recognises the importance of high-value, low impact tourism, and for the first time will be introducing the Green Stand Awards. These awards will recognise exhibitors who go the extra ‘green’ mile to design stands that are environmentally and socially sustainable. These awards have been a firm favourite at Meetings Africa, and will be judged against the Event Greening Forum’s (EGF) award criteria. This includes design, materials used, operations, transport, communication and innovation. Entrants also need to submit a written motivation as to why their stand is green.

The South African Tourism team have always been very receptive to our recommendations and to adopting new initiatives, which they have done with great results. We are looking forward to continuing this partnership and success with Africa’s Travel Indaba,” says Greg Mc Manus, Chairperson of the EGF.
