Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I to Open in Barcelona This Fall
Fairmont is finally coming to Barcelona: The luxury brand is set take over the 432-room Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I, rebranding it the Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I this autumn.
As part of the agreement, the hotel will undergo an extensive renovation starting in 2015, but will remain open throughout.
While details about the rebranded hotel's design remain elusive, the existing property has plenty to recommend it. (It was designed by architect Carlos Ferrater, and was the winner of the National Prize for Architecture in 1993.) The property has a spa with both indoor and outdoor pools and 13 treatment rooms. For business travelers, there's also plenty of banquet and meeting space covering 26,900 square feet as well as direct access to the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya, a congress center with more than 43,000 square feet of exhibition space and a 2,000-seat auditorium.
The hotel was inaugurated by the King and Queen shortly before the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. Amenities include the Polo Restaurant, Club Lounge and a lobby bar. It includes a fitness and spa with both indoor and outdoor pools, plus 13 treatment rooms.
Location, location, location: The hotel is on Avenida Diagonal and has views over the city and sea. It is also near Barcelona's famous shopping districts, Placa Catalunya and Passeig de Gracia.
