MPI Report Indicates Optimism for Meetings Industry

Meeting Professionals International (MPI) has published its Meetings Outlook, 2015 Spring Edition. The newest installment of the quarterly special report indicates 2015 is shaping up to be the year of intelligent growth for the meeting and event industry due to continuing periods of stability and moderate economic improvement.

Key findings include the following:
*74 percent of meeting professionals expect overall business conditions to improve in the near future, while the number of those predicting worse conditions has shrunk by 3 percent.
*Location-based functions (specifically, seamless check-in and facilitating attendee networking) are the top components that respondents plan to add to
their apps next year.
*A greater percentage of respondents predict an increase in live attendance (60 percent) than virtual attendance (56 percent).

Christian Savelli, senior director of business intelligence and research for MPI, told IMR partner MeetPie that a steady, positive growth mode is the best environment for organisations to grow intelligently.

“Organisations are now able to innovate, test new ideas and hire the right people—there’s no need to just throw warm bodies at projects, as can be the case when business is growing too quickly,” he said. “So you can focus on what matters for your organization; the fear is gone.”

Data in the report also indicates that budgets are increasing across the globe, although rising costs and failing to keep pace with attendee growth will make planners feel as if the belt is being tightened again.

Almost a third of those surveyed (28 percent) said regional/local and in house meetings help solve the problem of doing more with less, while a quarter cram content into shorter meetings, and use more technology, while just a tenth focus on meeting design.

The use of apps continues to rise, with 14 percent of respondents planning to use location-based technology, such as iBeacons, for session check in and attendee networking.
