Puerto Rico Hosts ICANN Conference

As the destination continues its recovery from Hurricanes Maria and Irma, Meet Puerto Rico, the organization responsible for attracting groups and conventions to Puerto Rico, reports it has successfully hosted the nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) 61 Community Forum from March 10-15. Held at the Puerto Rico Convention Center (PRCC), the conference attracted global delegates from various continents. It marked the first time since 2014 that ICANN held a meeting in North America. The convention, bringing an estimated $4.5 million in economic impact to Puerto Rico, brought in an even more important effect as it showcased the destination whose attendees experienced the hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues and culture of Puerto Rico bringing approximately 5,135 room nights, according to Meet Puerto Rico.

Alma Pedrosa, acting president & CEO, CPA, CDME, Meet Puerto Rico, reports that ICANN was one of the first major conferences in San Juan since Hurricane Maria. “Puerto Rico’s successful hosting of the recent CHTA Marketplace, followed by ICANN, continues to show the world, and the industry, that #PuertoRicoIsReady and we have everything it takes to host a large-scale conference,” Pedrosa said.

Meeting delegates enjoyed accommodations at the Sheraton Puerto Rico, Hyatt House, Hyatt Place, La Concha, AC Marriott, and Marriott San Juan, as well as a welcome by Governor Ricardo Rosselló followed by a dance showcasing the history and culture of Puerto Rico. Five days of meetings were interspersed with coffee breaks featuring traditional Puerto Rican foods and beverages, and pre-and post-trips featured many “only in Puerto Rico” experiences including a tour of the Bacardi Rum Factory.
