Just weeks after Hurricane Irma passed the destination, Puerto Rico is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Maria, currently a powerful category 5 storm with winds approaching 160 mph.

According to the latest forecast from Accuweather, Hurricane Maria could have a larger impact on the area than Hurricane Irma did, with up to about 10 percent of the island’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) potentially being impacted. The latest storm is expected to bring direct impacts to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, parts of Hispaniola and the Bahamas this week.

When Hurricane Irma hit Puerto Rico a little over a week ago, it largely spared the Puerto Rico Convention Center. Shortly after the storm passed, Meet Puerto Rico reported that the convention center and most of the island’s hotels were fully operational. Most of the damage was restricted to debris, and the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport was soon able to resume flight operations.

On its official Facebook page the Puerto Rico Convention Center reports that it has postponed two events thus far ahead of the storm: The Seniors show for October 3 and 4, and the Coffee & Chocolate Expo for October 28 and 29.

Accuweather reports that Hurricane Maria is set to track close to Puerto Rico Wednesday morning before crossing over the island during the day on Wednesday. The storm will then head very close to the Turks and Caicos Friday morning.

A hurricane warning is in effect for an area ranging from Cabo Engano to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic; Dominica; St. Kitts and Nevis; Montserrat; the U.S. Virgin Islands; the British Virgin Islands; and Puerto Rico (Culebra and Vieques). Tropical storm warnings are in effect for an area west of Puerto Plata to the northern border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti; west of Cabo Engano to Punta Palenque; Antigua and Barbuda; Saba and St. Eustatius; St. Maarten; Anguilla; Guadeloupe and the Dominican Republic. A hurricane watch is in effect for Saba and St. Eustatius; St. Maarten/St. Martin; St. Barts and Anguilla.
