Portuguese Company Creates Color Blind Code

In partnership with:

Colour has great significance in events, from the communication point of view. But there are 350 million people, overwhelmingly men, who can not correctly identify them. The number is released by Miguel Neiva, ColorADD project mentor, a colour identification code directed to colour blind people. "Colour is universal, except for those who can not identify it, and this universe is not that small," he says.
In addition, "it is a limitation non-visible to the eyes of others. And we are talking mostly about men, who never ask for directions..." (laughs). The fact that most communication is performed through colour excludes the colour blind. If parking in an event is organized by colour, or available seats, or badges... it arises a problem for those who have this limitation. If event organisers want to use the code and make events more accessible, they can purchase a license from ColorADD. These are adjusted depending on the buying entity dimension and their use is unlimited. "We validate the code and provide all consulting support, which may or may not have costs," explains Miguel Neiva. ColorADD intervened in CPLP Games, making the event colour blind accessible.

ColorAdd: One of the 40 ideas that will improve the world

The project took eight years to develop. "There was nothing like it in the world, there were no references, everything had to be built from scratch," says the graphic designer. Miguel Neiva started investigating, along with some doctors, what was colour blindness. "There was the idea that colourblinds change colours, but what happens is that they confuse colours and so they need guidance." After that, Neiva sought the colour blinds for opinion, "understanding what they wanted, what their needs were". This was followed by a survey and study of the elements of universal communication: road signs, international flag code, ground to air signals. "Colour and shape are two essential elements, so shape could very well take the colour function," he explains. With only three graphics, colour blinds can identify all colours. The project then began a recognition and accreditation process in the scientific community. At this point, the three priority intervention areas are education, transport and health.
