The Global Gateway Alliance (GGA) has released a new study on the airport Wi-Fi in New York metropolitan area airports and the 20 busiest airports around the United States

Passengers at New York and New Jersey airports can access a half an hour of free Wi-Fi, after which it costs either $4.95 an hour or $7.95 for 24 hours for continued access. This policy ranks below the U.S. norm, according for the study, with Chicago O’Hare and Miami being the only other airports in the study that fail to provide free and unlimited Internet access to their passengers.

15 of the 20 busiest airports in the United States provide unlimited free Wi-Fi to their passengers, the GGA said, with New York and New Jersey airports accounting for three of the five that do not. 14 of the airports did not provide unlimited free Wi-Fi in 2009, but by 2016 that number had shrunk to five.

The study also examined notable strategies airports have used to fund free Wi-Fi. Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, for example, has passengers watch an ad for access, but afterwards provides unlimited free access. Detroit Airport has passengers watch a 30-second video every 45 minutes. Minneapolis uses a tiered system in which all passengers have access to free Wi-Fi but can pay to access an ad-free version.
