Benelux: Dutch Hotel and Catering Industry Shrinks Again

Schipol AirportResearch by Rabobank shows the bad economy is getting to the Netherlands’ hotels and restaurants. Guests are spending less money and the same goes for companies. The industry has little chance of strengthening itself in the near future. In 2014, another small decrease in demand is expected. At the same time, the supply in almost every branch of the hotel and catering industry is growing, which makes for tougher competition.

The bank expects shrinkage of 0.2 percent in 2014 compared to this year for hotels and restaurants. This year, numbers were -0.6 percent. The situation gets worse for bars. A decrease of 3.3 percent is to be expected. This sadly is still better than this year’s figures of -6.5 percent.

Everything can be found on the internet these days, and the number of hotel and catering businesses is growing. This leads to price wars and a pressure on gains. Entrepreneurs must keep reinventing their business to make the difference. Creating unique experiences combined with attractive prices while keeping expenses manageable, is the key to surviving in this harsh industry. Cooperation between businesses as far as purchase, promotion and arrangements are concerned, is proving its value more than ever.
