Terror Attack in Mali Comes One Day After International Conference

According to The Washington Post, gunmen stormed a Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, Mali, early the morning of November 20, taking more than 135 people hostage, including 125 guests.

An update from The New York Times reports that authorities have freed all hostages from the hotel, with two assailants killed. The operation to retake the property is still underway. In all as many as 27 people have been killed. The Daily Telegraph reported earlier this morning that the Defense Ministry of France confirmed that French special forces have reached the hotel.

Meetpie.com reports that the attack comes just one day after the Mali International Mining Conference and Exhibition, which was held November 17-19 at the International Conference Centre of Bamako. The site says the majority of delegates who attended appear to be from the West African country. It is not yet known whether any delegates were caught up in the attack.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the takeover, the Washington Post said, although Mali has suffered attacks from militants affiliated with al-Qaeda and other organizations in the past.
