Middle East: Qatar Unveils Rise in H1 Visitor Numbers

In partnership with:

International visitor numbers to Qatar rose by eight percent in the first half of 2014 (January to June) to 1.42 million, according to a Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) report.

More than half a million GCC nationals (536,264) visited the destination, representing 38 percent of tourists.

“This healthy growth demonstrates Qatar’s transformation into one of the GCC’s top business, family, and leisure destinations,” said QTA Chief Tourism Development Officer Hassan Al Ibrahim. “We have to look beyond mere numbers to make a strategic shift towards quality tourism. This will emphasise hospitality, high standards of service, innovative developments and attractions grounded in Qatari culture and tradition.”

The Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 launched in February sets out a clear framework for the diversification of Qatar’s tourism product, which includes ramping up the Gulf state’s meeting and event business.

In 2014 Qatar has staged several large-scale conferences, exhibitions, festivals and sporting events, which have contributed to the boost in tourism numbers.
