DWTC extension speeds ahead

Work is racing towards completion at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) extension, as the venue prepares for the start of the exhibition season.

Previously scheduled for completion by the end of the year, it looks more likely that the new Sheikh Saeed Halls will open some time in October.

The new facility will include four inter-connected halls including one multi-purpose hall – The Trade Centre Arena. The Arena, which boasts 14-metre high ceilings and over 9,000 square metres of covered exhibition space, has the capacity to hold concerts for over 10,000 guests in an air conditioned, all-weather environment. With space for up to 34 regulation size tennis courts, the Arena will be able to host a variety of events including weddings, concerts, entertainment events and official sporting and athletic events.

“One of DWTC’s core strengths has always been its ability to support the changing needs of the region’s meetings sector. We have seen substantial growth in a number of key shows held at our venue during the first half of 2009 and the demand for world-class facilities has clearly risen. The additional halls are a critical step to provide infrastructure to support this growth and our commitment to the industry has helped us maintain momentum. I am extremely pleased to see the final plans moving forward on schedule,” said Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO of DWTC.

The Sheikh Saeed Halls will link directly to the new Dubai Metro, and it is estimated that 23-30 percent of visitors to the DWTC will use the Metro facility for accessing the site.

First half results for DWTC showed continued growth in the exhibitions sector, with a total of 21A record 551,938 visitors attended events hosted at or organised by DWTC during the first half of the year.

“In times of global economic challenges and financial instability, it is even more vital for corporations world-wide to continue to engage and interact. No other medium offers the same opportunities to meet with customers, to showcase new products and innovations and to create new business opportunities,” said Almarri.
