Bahrain pushes ahead with Expo City

Public and private sectors in Bahrain have come together to form a company to manage the future development of the new Expo City in Bahrain.

Planned to be executed in two phases, the project will increase the size of the existing Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre (BIECC) by around 10 times and will entail an estimated investment cost of US$815 million.

It is estimated that the new facility will bring in incremental revenues of US$305 million annually to the kingdom’s meetings sector.

Expo City will be executed in two phases in 2012 and 2014, respectively: Phase One will comprise a 100,000-square-metre purpose-built exhibition facility, of which 75,000 square metres will be allocated for sub-divisible exhibition space with an integrated 25,000-square-metre convention centre; this will be complemented by a 50,000-square-metre sub-divisible exhibition and convention centre to be developed in Phase Two.
