Yas Hotel on track for F1 opening

Frenzied construction is currently underway on the Yas Hotel on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island to ensure it is completed in time for the 2009 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. The Yas Hotel is one of seven hotels to launch on Yas Island in time for the Grand Prix.

Designed by Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture of Asymptote Architecture, Yas Hotel is positioned directly on top of the Yas Marina Circuit, and is located half on land, half on water, overlooking the Marina. The striking design features a veil of 5,000 glass panels on a steel frame lit by colour-changing LEDs. The hotel will consist of two separate buildings, connected by a link bridge which overlooks the track and features a restaurant and bar.

Speaking at the launch of the hotel at Arabian Travel Market in May, Paul Bell, managing director of Aldar Hotels and Hospitality – owners and operators of the property, said its unique design and location would make Yas Hotel a 'flagship' property for Abu Dhabi.

“This is a flagship product on a flagship development; its all about design, speed and excitement,” said Bell. “We are the only hotel in the world that has the F1 running right through the middle of it – it doesn’t look like anything else we’ve ever seen before as a branded hotel, its part of the race.”

The hotel will features 252 deluxe and 247 executive rooms and suites. Meetings and conference groups will be a target market with 1,625 square metres of total conference and banqueting space, including a ballroom, six meeting rooms and four boardrooms.

Other features include a luxury spa in the form of a traditional hammam, a gym and roof space with lounge, cafes and pools, plus access to other recreational facilities in phase one of the Yas Island development, including an 18-hole Links Championship Golf Course and a 143-berth marina.

This is the first hotel to be managed by Aldar, and Bell said there were no further plans to add more hotels to the portfolio. “The vast majority of hotels we build will be managed by an operating company – we don’t see this as a global development brand, we see Yas Hotel currently as a one off.”
