MPI aims for regional chapter

Meetings association looks to grow regional base

Meetings Professionals International (MPI) is looking to strengthen its presence in the region and build upon its vision of creating a ‘rich, global community’ for the meetings industry.

Didier Scaillet, MPI’s chief development officer, told meetme that given the huge potential that exists for meetings business in the Middle East, one of the association’s key objectives would be to create a dedicated MPI Chapter in the Gulf.

“The Gulf region has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world creating a unique and emerging marketplace for meetings and events,” said Scaillet.

“Our mission at MPI is simple: to make our members successful. This is why MPI is leading the charge to make meetings and events, and those who produce them, a key strategic component of every organisation’s business. For MPI to be truly global then creating a chapter in the Gulf is clearly an important objective.”

MPI is rolling out a raft of educational programmes in the region dedicated to boosting the development of the meetings industry in this part of the world.

MPI held its second Gulf Meetings and Events Conference in Abu Dhabi in March. The association has also teamed up with the Qatar MICE Development Institute (QMDI) to launch the first Global Certificate in Meeting Operations 1 (GCMO1) in Doha late last year. The fully sold-out course was followed by a second edition a few weeks ago.

“This is the first tangible manifestation of our newly developed knowledge plan and the fact that we launched it in the Gulf is a statement in itself,” said Scaillet. He added that further educational programmes and networking events were in the pipeline to support the local industry – particularly in the light of the current challenging economic situation.

“Our industry is a significant economic contributor and supports jobs, and in the Gulf we are determined to continue with the development of our own educational programme and networking events.

“The challenge ahead is to ensure that the region understands the criteria of planners, and the need for the highest ROI. By establishing a credible MPI Chapter in the region we believe the community involved will share knowledge and best practices, connect with people and marketplaces that will help to understand these difficult economic times and find solutions to help their businesses through 2009.”
