Middle East event society to launch

The first society dedicated to the Middle East events industry, a local chapter of ISES (International Special Events Society) is to get off the ground by the end of the year. The society is headed up by Adrian Bell, executive director and co-founder of one of Dubai’s biggest event agencies, Action Impact.

Bell took over as head of the chapter-in-formation after the departure of previous president Mark Gunner. He admitted that the long-awaited society has faced a number of obstacles in its formation so far: “We actually started the process about a year ago and to be quite frank with you it stalled really. It’s been a very tough and challenging year for all of us and then in the summer our president Mark Gunner left to go back to the UK.”

But the wheels are now in motion, with the official launch date for ISES targeted for December. So far event planners from Vok Dams, EMDI (Event Management and Development Institute), Siren Consulting, B Communications, Dubai Shopping Festival, EFM and the Atlantis Hotel are on board, and the society is welcoming new members.

Bell said ISES Middle East was committed to fostering collaboration and corporation among events industry players, through networking and educational events.

“Talking and collaborating with competitors can be a very positive thing,” said Bell. “I’ve been here 11 years and there are so many people in our industry that I’ve never even met that I would love to meet and share experiences with. Very rarely do we all come together to discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of the industry - I think that’s a very healthy and mature next step for the industry.”

He added that regular networking and increased communication would help the events industry to mature. “ISES is about professional respect as well,” said Bell. “Sometimes we are all exposed to undercutting and dirty tricks and so forth and we need to bring that forward and see each other as less of a threat and in a more professional manner.”
