Agency to nurture local talent

Event planners should look closer to home when booking entertainment for events, according to local talent agency Bareface Entertainment.

While planners typically look to fly professional entertainers in from overseas, often at great expense, the Dubai-based model agency Bareface which recently diversified into the entertainment sector, says there is an abundance of talent to be found locally which is far too often being overlooked.

“Clients often think that they have to look overseas to get good international performers but there are many artistes living right here on their own doorstep who have international experience in some of the world’s largest events,” said Dan Bolton, head of Bareface Entertainment. “These artistes are getting overlooked.”

Bareface Entertainment manages all types of performers including dancers, magicians, speciality acts, DJs, musicians, vocalists and circus performers, and is constantly recruiting for new acts to join the agency. Bolton said: “The UAE has an abundance of talented people - the problem is that they are all segregated, doing their own thing and until now did not have an agency to bring them together professionally and help create costumes and arrange choreography etc.”

According to Bolton there is huge potential for untapped local talent to develop in the region, and representing the artistes’ interests on a professional level is the first step towards nurturing that talent. “Dubai is a young, emerging market regarding events and entertainment. If you look at London, Barcelona or Paris, they all have street entertainers, buskers and dancers on every street corner – its part of the fabric and life blood of the city. Dubai is not quite there yet but I believe in its potential and that of the whole region to be huge.”

He admitted that on occasion requests for more unusual acts still required a search further afield: “If the client is looking for something extraordinary such as a contortionist, then they would have to look overseas, there is simply not the demand to keep them working often enough to stay in the UAE full time.”
