Financial, Insurance Conference Planners Gather in Hawaii for Annual Event

Hawaii’s meetings image got a boost last month when Hawaii Island (formerly known as the Big Island) served as the host site for the 2014 Financial & Insurance Conference Planners (FICP) Annual Conference. Nearly 600 attendees participated in the conference held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village from November 16-19, many of who extended their trips for pre- or post-event site inspections or leisure time on Kauai, Oahu, Lanai and Maui.

FICP is an individual membership association for meeting planners of the insurance and financial services industry, a lucrative segment and high-priority market for Meet Hawaii to generate new bookings for corporate meetings and incentive programs, especially for single-property resorts on all islands. This is the third time that Hawaii has hosted FICP’s annual conference, with the previous meetings held on Maui in 2004 and Oahu in 1995.

“Hosting the FICP Annual Conference was a great opportunity to showcase Hawaii’s resources and attributes as a meetings destination to individuals that have a lot of influence in the booking and planning of meetings and incentive programs for their companies,” Brian Lynx, vice president of meetings, conventions and incentives for the Hawaii Tourism Authority, said in a statement.

The FICP Conference, themed Ohana – Connection, opened with a session that combined the traditional and non-traditional elements of Hawaii and its host Hawaiian culture, including a Hawaiian oli (chant) and blessing, an ancient-style hula, and an ukulele performance by Taimane Gardner whose musical stylings feature a mix of Classical, Rock, and Latin genres.

The following three days included 30 educational sessions, addressing topics such as meeting technology, gamification, the airline industry, international meetings, and contract issues, as well as attending special Hawaii-inspired networking events.

Meet Hawaii, its Island Chapters, and industry partners have received more than 35 qualified leads with potential for bookings in the next three years and beyond as a result of the 2014 FICP Annual Conference. A post-event survey conducted showed that 96% of attendees rated the overall conference either good or excellent.

Leading the effort on behalf of Meet Hawaii and the Island Chapters was Kathy Dever, Regional Director of Accounts. She was joined by hotels and DMCs statewide including the Andaz Maui at Wailea, DeSilva Meeting Consultants, Fairmont Kea Lani Maui, Fairmont Orchid Hawaii, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Grand Wailea, Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hyatt Resorts Hawaii, Island Partners Hawaii, Kathy Clarke Hawaii, Marriott Resorts Hawaii, Mauna Kea Resort, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows, MC&A, Ritz Carlton Kapalua, St. Regis Princeville, and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.
