Munich Airport to Get New Hilton Hotel

Hilton Worldwide has signed an agreement to rebrand a 389-room hotel within Munich Airport under its flagship Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand. The new hotel is set to open in 2015. Significantly, the property is the only hotel with a direct link to the main terminal building, and is the latest addition to the company's expanding portfolio of hotels at European transport hubs.

Under the new agreement, Hilton will manage the upper upscale hotel on behalf of owners Allresto Flughafen München Hotel und Gaststätten GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH, from January 2015. The hotel, which is currently operating as Kempinski Munich Airport Hotel, will undergo a significant renovation and a further 160 rooms will be added to the existing building in 2017. Once the rebrand is complete, the hotel will be known as Hilton Munich Airport.

"Munich is one of Europe's busiest airports, with almost 40 million passengers using the airport each year," Rob Palleschi, global head of Hilton Hotels & Resorts, said in a statement, adding that Hilton was the first hotel to open an airport hotel with the San Francisco Airport Hilton in 1963. The Hilton Munich Airport will be the 13th Hilton brand hotel in Germany. Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, Europe & Africa, Hilton Worldwide noted that the agreement paves the way for a Hilton hotel at each of Europe's seven busiest passenger airports.

The current hotel has 389 guest rooms, including 43 suites, divided across two five-story wings. The hotel has a spa facility that includes a 17-meter swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam bath, fitness area, seven treatment rooms and a pool bar.

Munich is host to a number of international trade shows, including Bauma, BAU, ISPO and Expo Real, in addition to Oktoberfest, all of which attract large numbers of business and leisure travelers to the city and contribute to a diverse demand mix.

2015 will also mark the opening of the new Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands, a redevelopment currently under construction that will allow guests direct access to the international terminal building.

Hilton Munich Airport will join the dual-branded Hilton Frankfurt Airport and Hilton Garden Inn Frankfurt Airport. Other Hilton properties in Munich include Hilton Munich City and Hilton Munich Park, which recently underwent a major refurbishment program.
